Apple Reportedly targeting mid-December for IOS Release 4.3

Earlier today we noted the increasing rumors about Apple and News Corp. work together to launch a new tablet-based product, with John Gruber weighing think that Apple is tentatively planning a media event for December 9th introduce the new offer. Gruber noted that the key role in Apple's product development was the creation of APIs to support billing recurring subscription through iTunes Store accounts, a feature that would probably need another set updated IOS.
MACSTOR adds its voice to the rumor, saying that Apple was planning for an IOS version 4.3 for Monday, December 13. This release plan was based, however, on a first iOS 4.2 See early November, a timetable was pushed back after Apple discovered several bugs just before the outbreak. Here's what we heard from a reliable source: When Apple did not know about the issues WiFi in genetically modified iOS 4.2, the OS was scheduled to be released weeks before Nov. 22. Apple has found the WiFi issues, released one second and GM build iOS 4.2 is released yesterday. It was released in November, but he was in the first half of November. Anyway, before WiFi was discovered, Apple had already planned to release a new version of IOS 4.x in mid-December. Specifically, they were planning for an IOS version 4.3 December 13, a Monday.
Our source tells us it is unclear whether the "extra time" that was required to transport iOS 4.2 (actually, it iOS 4.2.1) will delay for the release of rumors iOS 3.4 December 13 or not. iOS 4.3 should, however, include bug fixes and code maintenance. It is likely that 4.3 will also address the initial questions in AirPlay but we can not confirm this just yet.
The source also indicates that iOS 4.3 shall be in effect support the functionality needed new recurring subscription for The Daily, with a possibility of larger cloud services to come together.
With the launch of the 13th December rumor iOS 04.03 less than three weeks now, we have not seen any apple seed versions of the next version for developers, which casts doubt Apple will be able to achieve this goal .

iOS 4.2 Not Coming Until November 16th? [Updated]

Contradicting a report from earlier this week that correctly predicted the release of Mac OS X 10.6.5 yesterday and also claimed that iOS 4.2 will be released tomorrow, iPhoneHellas reports [Google translation] that iOS 4.2 will not launch tomorrow and may debut next Tuesday, November 16th.

iPhoneHellas has offered correct information on iOS releases several times in the past, including accurately pinpointing the release of iPhone OS 2.2 ten days ahead of time and iOS 4.0.1 several hours before its launch.

iOS 4.2 will finally unify Apple's iOS devices on iOS 4, bringing such features as multitasking, home screen folders, and Game Center to the iPad for the first time while also delivering AirPrint, AirPlay, and a number of other enhancements to the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch.

Update: MacStories reports that iOS 4.2 may be seeing delays due to issues with Wi-Fi connectivity on the iPad.
Basically, even if the iPad manages to successfully connect to a local network, the connection is lost after a few minutes. This seems to be the most common problem among users, although some can't simply use Safari at all. The bug has been reported to Apple, and they apparently decided to delay the release of iOS 4.2 to fix the bug.
According to the report, Apple may release a new golden master version of iOS 4.2 as early as Friday, but a public release would come later than the previously-rumored Friday debut.

AirPlay Functionality Apparently Removed From iPhone 3G

9 to 5 Mac reports that iPhone 3G owners have been struck with yet another blow, this time with the apparent removal of AirPlay functionality in the golden master version of iOS 4.2. The feature had been functional on the iPhone 3G in earlier developer builds, but appears to have been removed in the homestretch.

After speaking to multiple developers and users testing out the iOS 4.2 betas, we have determined that AirPlay did in fact work on the iPhone 3G at one point, meaning the AirPlay functionality was definitely removed from Apple's two-year-old iPhone at its GM stage.
The report notes that Apple's product page for the Apple TV claims that AirPlay functionality is coming on "all iOS 4 devices", but the company has apparently changed its mind about iPhone 3G compatibility for unknown reasons.

The change is not the first to see the iPhone 3G lose access to a feature that had been enabled in the development process. Early developer builds of iOS 4.1 offered access to Game Center functionality for all iOS 4-compatible devices, but Apple later disabled the feature for the iPhone 3G and second-generation iPod touch before finally restoring compatibility for the second-generation iPod touch but leaving it out of the public release for the iPhone 3G.

Facebook Rolls Out Mobile Initiative, Updates iPhone App With Groups and Places, Says iPad Isn't 'Mobile'

At a media event held today, Facebook announced a new push into mobile, bringing updates to the company's Android and iOS applications and rolling out a new single sign on service that will allow users logged into the company's applications to also access other applications such as Flixster, Groupon, and Loopt. Single sign on is currently available on a handful of Android applications, with support for iPhone apps coming soon.

On the iOS front, Facebook announced an update to its application for the iPhone and iPod touch, bringing support for the enhanced "Groups" functionality rolled out recently and new features for the "Places" functionality, including the ability to find deals and a new option to "star" friends in the Places list to make it easier to check in with them.
Using Places on the iPhone already lets you share where you are and find nearby friends. Now with the iPhone 3.3 application, you can also find nearby deals from your favorite businesses--from restaurants down the block to major retailers. Deals are only available from Places in the U.S, for now, and we'll be expanding them to more merchants over time.
The updated Facebook application should be available in the App Store later today, although the the application currently appears to be entirely unavailable.

When asked about Facebook's plans for an iPad application, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed that the company does not consider the iPad to be a mobile device. When pressed on the issue, Facebook executives noted that they are still trying to understand the best approach to take for tablet devices like the iPad.
The real hint to Facebook's iPad plans, though, is that Tseng focused on the form factor and not iOS. This could mean that Facebook's looking to build an HTML5 version of its website optimized for tablets. At the very least, Facebook seems intent on keeping a consistent experience across all tablet devices.

In the meantime though, Tseng points out that Facebook is accessible via the iPad through the official website (which is pretty darn functional) and through touch.facebook.com.
Zuckerberg then clarified that Facebook was attempting to keep the focus of the event on mobile, and the company simply doesn't see the iPad as being in the same class as "mobile" devices like the iPhone and Android.

Update: The new version of Facebook has now gone live [App Store] as Version 3.3.1

iPhone 4 Availability Now at 'Within 24 Hours' in U.S.

Availability of the iPhone 4 continues to improve in the United States, with the company's online store now offering shipping estimates of "within 24 hours" for new orders. After spending much of the summer with three-week shipping estimates, supplies of the iPhone 4 began to increase in early October with a move to 5-7 business day shipping estimates. Estimates improved once again to 1-3 business days in recent weeks before making the final move to the minimum possible window today.

iPhone 4 shipping estimates in many other countries, where the company is typically selling unlocked and/or unsubsidized phones online, are registering with estimates of up to two weeks for new orders.

iPhone 5 to Support NFC-Based Portable 'Remote' Computing?

Apple's interest in Near Field Communication (NFC), the short-range wireless technology that supports such services as "tap and go" credit card payments, has been well-established, but a new report claims that Apple maybe be planning to include the technology in the fifth-generation iPhone to allow Mac users to essentially keep a portable version of their Mac on their iPhone and wirelessly allow any compatible Mac to run as if it was their own Mac.
If users wave a NFC-equipped iPhone at a NFC Mac (they need to be in close proximity to interact), the Mac will load all their applications, settings and data. It will be as though they are sitting at their own machine at home or work. When the user leaves, and the NFC-equipped iPhone is out of range, the host machine returns to its previous state.

"The Mac authenticates with the iPhone, which contains a lot of the information the computer needs, such as bookmarks, passwords and other data," said our source, who asked to remain anonymous. "The system would essentially turn any Apple computer into your own - like you're actually working on your own computer. Same settings, look, bookmarks, preferences. It would all be invisible. Your iPhone would be all you needed to unlock your Mac."
The source reports that smaller items of information such as passwords, documents, and preference files would be stored directly on the iPhone, but that larger chunks of data such as applications and music and photo libraries would likely have to be stored in the cloud to be included in the service, given the sizes of those items and the relatively slow transfer speeds used in NFC.

According to the source, Apple has been working on this implementation of NFC technology for "some time", but it is of course possible that it may never see a public release.

iOS 4.2 GM: New Multitasking Bar, MobileMe Login Changes

Apple's new iOS 4.2 GM comes with a few additional changes. The multitasking bar now adds both Volume and Brightness controls for fast access. Also pictured is the new AirPlay button (on right).

We're hesitant to read too much into this just yet, but there has been one interesting change in iOS 4.2 noted first by a tech company in Southern California. The new MobileMe account setup in iOS 4.2 GM (left) allows you to log into MobileMe settings using an Apple ID. Apple even offers a link to create a free Apple ID right there. Apple ID logins don't seem to work yet, so we're not sure what the intended purpose is. Apple may simple be linking Apple IDs and MobileMe accounts for a consolidated login. However, the a more fanciful interpretation is that Apple would allow any user access to some of the currently pay-only MobileMe features.

Target to Carry iPhone Beginning November 7th

Retail store chain Target today announced that it will begin carrying the iPhone as of November 7th in its 846 stores that offer Target Mobile centers. Target will carry both the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 3GS, and will offer quick, on-the-spot activation.
"At Target we continue to offer our guests the best in electronics so we're happy to add iPhone to our Target Mobile offerings," said Mark Schindele, senior vice president, merchandising, Target. "With expert support from Target Mobile specialists and in-store activation, our guests will be able to leave the store with a new, working iPhone3GS or iPhone4 in-hand."
Target began selling the iPad in early October, and thus it is no surprise that the retailer has picked up the iPhone as well. Rival Wal-Mart has been selling the iPhone since December 2008, and launched iPad sales just a few weeks after Target.

Apple Removes Mention of White iPhone 4 From Online Store

Following another delay until spring 2011 for the white iPhone 4 and rumors that the device has been canceled altogether, Apple has now removed mention of the model from its primary ordering page for the iPhone 4 in all localizations of its online store.

Apple's online store had previously depicted both the white and black iPhone 4, with text under the image of the white model noting that it was unavailable for ordering or in-store pickup. Apple continues to use a white iPhone 4, however, in promotional images for the company's bumpers. The white model is also still shown in Apple's iPhone 4 image gallery.
