Compass HD + Vector Magnetometer / Gravitometer

Description

AVAILABLE FOR FREE UNTIL IT IS UPDATED TO AN UNIVERSAL APP (running on iPhone/iPod Touch AND on the iPad) FOR FREE! SO WE RECOMMEND GRABBING IT NOW. Please write a nice review if you like it, we will constantly update the product!

The first and only Vector Magnetometer on the iPhone 3GS, now for the iPad! - Visualize the hidden world of magnetism around you in 3 dimensions! It can be perfectly used to explore and measure the direction and strength of the magnetic field of random objects around you (which can be quite fascinating!). With limitations (see docs) it can be used as a metal detector to find electric lines or pipes in walls (always good to check a wall before drilling in, at least better with this than not to check at all). Another application is to use this tool as a rough estimate of your north-south position on earth without using the GPS(!) - just by measuring the local earth magnetic declination (it works fine even while flying in a plane to check how the declination changes).

The application has four different displays modes to visualize the magnetic field:

✔ Absolute Mode: Displays the absolute magnetic field in microtesla (μT) measured by the magnetometer.
✔ North Mode: A compass head-up displays the geographic north along with the pointer that directs to the magnetic north (thus display difference magnetic to geographic north).
✔ Declination Mode: Two arrows will be displayed to indicate the declination of the earth magnetic field (0° just on equator, increasing to north with blue pointer direction up or south with blue pointer direction down).
✔ Relative Mode: This mode shows the relative strength (absolute minus compensation vector) of the magnetic field in μT.

… and five different display modes for acceleration visualization:

✔ Absolute Mode: Displays the reverse acceleration of the iPhone (1g up when hold steady).

✔ X-Rotation ✔ Y-Rotation ✔ Z-Rotation: The arrow will display the rotation around the X-, Y- and Z-Axis of the iPhone. The digital indicator shows the angle numerically (-180° - +180°). A way to calibrate will be added with one of the next updates, so you could use this as a level.

✔ Relative Mode: This mode shows the relative strength (absolute minus compensation vector) of the acceleration.

For a detailed documentation, please visit our product homepage.

For recreational use only. However it CAN (!) be very accurate. The measurement is performed as good as possible (we try our best) by using the inbuilt accelerometer and magnetometer to their limits. The range of the accelerometer typically has a max of ±3g (~4.2g displayed here if combined) and each magnetometer usually recalibrates internally when over ±120μT in one axis. However, tell us your experience!

Customer Reviews

Hmm

Compass veers wildly through 180 degrees when iPad is tilted. Completely unable to tell which direction it's facing.

Cool idea, though.
Fantastic

Okay why the bad reviews? It's not like apple tried to make a compass app and this actually works rather well so don't be so ungrateful :P

"My new favorite iPad news reader" - TNW Apps
"It’s simple, elegant, clean-looking, and just simply works great" - theipadfan.com

What makes River of News different is that it brings infinite scrolling or the expanded view to the iPad. It's not based on drilling down levels of hierarchy and then back up and back down. Nor is it trying to replicate the dead tree model of laying articles out in pages of columns. Your news sources are streams, and River of News lets you scroll through them that way. Why should you have to jump back and forth between header and article? Why be forced with every article to make a worthiness decision based on a little picture and a couple lines of text? Why hit a little button or have to pull?

Why not just scroll?

Scroll up and down within a stream. Swipe left and right to change streams. Simple.

Apple Briefly Approves DOS Emulator for iPhone and iPad

A new iOS app called iDOS runs programs originally written for the old Microsoft DOS operating system from the 80s and 90s, including thousands of classic PC games and early versions of Microsoft Windows. The powerful app was approved by Apple late Monday night but it was just pulled from the app store — tragic, since it’s a vision of just how awesome a DOS emulator could be on the iPhone or iPad.
iDOS is based on DOSBox, a very popular DOS emulator for Windows, Mac and Linux computers. While there are many potential uses for it, the most popular use is for playing classic computer games likeWing Commander or King’s Quest that don’t run on today’s computers. The legality or illegality of downloading these old games that are no longer for sale is a bit sticky, and DOS itself is the property of Microsoft, hence our surprise that the app was approved to begin with.
Apple has been wary of approving emulators for admission into the App Store, but it recently eased up its approval requirements. In some cases emulators have been approved with no problems, but we can’t say the same for other attempts such as a few classic Nintendo emulators.
The app is very short on included programs or tutorials. It simply comes with playable versions of Ms. Pac Manand Dig Dug. If you want to install other applications or games, you’ll have to figure out how to do it on your own — but that’s all part of the old-school DOS spirit, isn’t it? Still, the lack of some basics such as the EDIT or PRINT commands in the command line ensures that you’ll spend some extra time getting set up as compared to one of the desktop versions of DOSBox.
But otherwise it’s a beautifully designed app, especially on the iPad, which surrounds the DOS emulation with delightful graphics depicting retro computer gear and the like. Customizable on-screen keypads are ideal for tailoring your experience to specific programs and games, you can force programs to run in their original 4:3 aspect ratio, and with a little technical know-how you can get most any old program working.
Mobile gaming blog Touch Arcade actually has screenshots of an old version of Microsoft Windows running on the iPad version, and users are sharing their experiences with different programs in forum threads around the web.
It would be nice to see a great app like this stay in the App Store for more than a few hours.
